Subject: [*] A Printing XCMD - PrintIt
PrintIt
(version 1.0)
* Al Caughey, August
1993
What Does it do?
This XCMD prints the text of visible card fields and/or background fields on
an 8.5"x11" page (each card is printed on a separate page). The text of each
field is printed at the same position as it appears on the card in a rectangle
with the same dimensions as the field. Foreground or background printing is
permitted across a network or directly to the printer. Based upon (entirely
biased) observations, the XCMD is very much faster than Hypercard - although,
at the moment, I have no data to give an indication of the size of the
improvement.

Subject: [*] Cambridge Medline Tutor
Cambridge Medline Tutor contains Hypercard 1.2.5 stacks used (several
thousand times) at University of Iowa, Hardin Library for the Health
Sciences, to teach library users to search the Cambridge CD-ROM version of
the Medline database. Since Cambridge no longer produces CD-ROM Medline,
the stacks are not directly usable as teaching tools; however, they contain
scripting techniques that are of general applicability for CAI.
Especially unusual about these stacks is that they use Hypercard on a Mac
to teach use of an IBM computer (pre-Windows). Because of this, the stacks
are controlled almost exclusively from the keyboard, instead of using the
mouse.
Other techniques that may be useful include:
-A time-out script that returns the system to the introductory screen after a
set time of inactivity.
-Technique to superimpose a relatively small field of text on the screen
gradually in an aesthetically pleasing way.
-Graphic design and simple animation techniques to simulate screens and
screen transitions in a command-line DOS environment.
To use stacks, put them all in a folder, and open HardinStart
I would suggest putting in Hypercard directory.

Dockernaut 1.2 is a shareware (now only $15!) control panel/extension
for Macintoshes that are frequentely used with different sized
monitors or different docks (for Duos). It allows you to have
different sets of preferences for applications and extensions
depending on your configuration.
Version 1.2 works around a DockingDispatch/Virtual Memory bug by
disabling the "Use Dock Attributes" feature when VM is on. It is also
better at determining the names of docks. You can now choose what
depth your monitor is switched to at Startup
Dockernaut requires System 7.0 and a 68020 or better Macintosh.

Finder Sounds 1.3.1 by Greg Smith
I found this in my archives the other day, and realised that it wasn't
posted on the archives.
Finder Sounds will only work with Systems 6.0.4 to System 6.0.8 inclusive.
If you want to use them with System 7, see System 7 Finder Sounds
Since the Macintosh System Software version 6.0.4 came out, the Finder has
had the undocumented ability to play sounds corresponding to various
events. Such events include opening and closing windows, creating and
deleting files, and even modifying windows. All you really need to take
advantage of this feature is a piece of code. Drag Finder Sounds and
Finder Sounds Config to your system folder and reboot. You will then have
a sonic Finder!

Please place this archive on the info-mac FTP site if it is not already

It may come in useful for some people pulling their hair out trying to open
and read "Glue" documents that they may find. (File type "SIMA")
Here is the excript of the readme file I made:
----
This is the program "Viewer" for opening "Glue" document files on the
Macintosh.
If you happen to have an old file with the type "SIMA" and the creator "SOLG"
(a file created with SuperViewer, SuperViewerDA, or SuperImageSaver), or
creator
"GEOL" (a file created with AppleLink) then you can use this program to view
this document. It's best to cut each page and paste them into a pict file of
type "ttxt", because TeachText documents are now supported much more than Glue
documents.. as well as being more compact. The newest versions of TeachText
can view both small text and color PICT files.
SuperViewer documents have an icon with a little round "viewmaster" disk on
them with little black squares on it. AppleLink documents of this type have
something resembling the standard "PICT" document icon with an envelope in
front of it.

Subject: [*] Jotto 1.1 (word game)
Jotto is a simple word game based on logic and frustration.
The computer will pick a five-letter word from a 2000+ word
database, and you have 15 tries to guess it. You will get
feedback on how many letters in your guess are in the actual
word, but beware: each guess must be a valid five-letter word,
or you will not get any feedback about it at all.
Jotto 1.1 is a minor revision which fixes a few bugs running in
2-bit graphics mode, adds an option to control whether or not
non-words are counted against your 15 tries (thank you Mark
Anbinder), and makes the help slightly more helpful.
Jotto is free; there is no shareware fee. It supports color,
grayscale, and B/W monitors and works under system 6 or 7.
(For technical reasons, sounds may require system 6.0.7 or later.)
Please e-mail comments and suggestions to the author at
f8dy@netaxs.com (Mark Pilgrim).

Maelstrom High Score Contest!
--------------------------
Ambrosia Software, Inc. is running a Maelstrom high score contest!
When you get a high score in Maelstrom 1.3, you'll be given a 10
letter high score code that'll allow you to enter your score in the
contest! The contest runs from September 1st, 1993 to December 31st,
1993 so get your score codes in quick!
You can mail, fax, or e-mail them to us; see below for our address,
fax, and e-mail information. You must be using Maelstrom 1.3 to get
the high score code, and should send in just the code (not your
score), and your name/address that you used when you registered for
Maelstrom.
The top 50 scores will receive a cool Maelstrom/Ambrosia T-shirt; cash
prizes go out to the top 3 scores as follows: 1st place: $300. 2nd
place: $100. 3rd place: $50. Send in as many score codes as you
like; we'll use only the best score you submit. You must be a
registered user to enter the contest, so please include your
name/address along with your score code so we can check our database
to make sure you are registered.
Inside Mac Games - The Premier Macintosh Gaming Magazine - will be
publishing the current top ten scores each month until the contest
ends, so you'll know how your competition is doing! If you don't
subscribe to Inside Mac Games, I highly recommend it. Subscriptions
are only $24 for 12 issues.
Cheating. When I was putting the high score contest version of
Maelstrom together, I thought of all sorts of sneaky techniques I
could implement to make sure that no one would cheat in the contest.
However I decided that this went against everything I believe in, and
did not do it.
Victoire/AXIS (programs that allow you to cheat while playing games)
will not work with Maelstrom 1.3, and may even crash the game. The
author of said programs, Sam Caughron, has agreed not to update the
programs to work with Maelstrom 1.3 until the contest is over. So
please don't complain to him that you can't cheat in Maelstrom
anymore--he knows.
Hackers will undoubtably be able to cheat to get a high score code;
however I respectfully ask that you not spoil the contest for everyone
else. Thanks in advance.

[*] Right On Time 2.5.1
This version fixes a bug in 2.5 which could cause a crash after editing an
event, under certain circumstances. I also forgot to include the "Sounds"
file. It replaces version 2.5.
Right On Time is a personal time manager. It features a calendar, To-Do list,
reminders (alarms), and even a menubar clock. You can set up repeating
events,
be warned ahead of time about upcoming events, archive old events, assign
categories to events, play sounds, manage your to-do list, etc.
Right On Time contains the most-used features of commercial applications such
as Now Up To Date, First Things First, DateBook, etc., yet is very easy to
use,
smaller (both in disk space and RAM), does not require any system extensions,
and costs much less. If you are at all interested in the various personal
time
managers, check this one out!
Right On Time should run on all macs using system 6 or later, uses color and
large screens if you have them, and is system 7 friendly (supports required
AppleEvents, and 1 custom AppleEvent). This is shareware, $15.

Subject: [*] StockStack....
Hi there,
I do not know if I did this right, cause it's the first time I upload to an
FTP site. I'm a champion at downloading software, but uploading... Anyways,
should this work, please include the following description, taken from the
READ ME file:
---
$tock$tack is a Hypercard( stack which allows you to track
various technical indicators for individual stocks, mutual
funds, market indices (such as the Dow Jones Industrial
Average), currencies, bonds, and interest rate instruments. It
tracks and plots the stock price (open, high, low, and close),
trading volume, moving averages, stochastics, Relative Strength
Index, and "On Balance Volume", on a daily, weekly, or monthly
basis.
$tock$tack was originally designed to utilize quote files (in a
TEXT format) from the Prodigy* Interactive Personal Service.
Consult your Prodigy* service user's manual for information on
how to download quotes to a text file. I have also added the
capability to read America OnLine* Stock Portfolio Display
files, CompuServe* MQuote II files, CompuServe* Information
Manager QuickQuotes files, CompuServe* Navigator QuickQuote files,
and GEnie* quote files (comma-delimited). You may also manually
enter data for your stocks. If you have some other format that you
download quotes in, or from a service other than those listed above,
please contact me and I'll look into including that format in future
versions of $tock$tack.
$tock$tack requires HyperCard( software version 2.1, at least 2
megabytes of RAM (under System 6) or 4 megabytes under System 7.
HyperCard( must be allocated at least 1500K of RAM (change by
"Getting Info" on HyperCard). The stack will automatically size
itself for a 13" RGB screen (640x480). If your screen size is
different, the stack will be the standard size for a 9" screen
(512x342). If you desire a small card despite having a larger
screen, holding the Command-key while opening $tock$tack (each
time) will force a 9" standard card.
You may try this stack for 40 days without registering. During
this time, you have full graphing capabilites, but the stack
will only maintain 50 days worth of data. After that time
period, the stack will not allow you to add additional data
without the password, which you obtain when you register. Once
you have registered, you will be allowed to configure the stack
to your desires, telling it how many days to maintain data, what
graphs to graph, how many days to use for various statistics,
and what stock commision rates to use. You will also be
informed when future upgrades are available. Some planned
additions include:
1. Continuing to write routines as external functions to speed
up the program.
2. The capability to track a portfolio, possibly multiple
portfolios.
To register, send $40 and the following information to:

Finder Sounds are back again ! Not quite in their old form, but at least
some are usable. When Apple wrote System 7, they removed the hooks that
Finder Sounds uses. So, all the sounds used in Finder Sounds have been
extracted and saved as System 7 sound files. These can be used in
conjunction with applications that will play sounds when you perform a

Subject: 800 Problems - Take one down...
It seems that I have found my problem with my new 800. I have a wireless
IR mouse which has worked flawlessly for years with my SE/30 and Quadra
900. It uses no INIT or anything, but it doesn't work on the 800. I am
back to a mouse with a tail. Of course, I don't have any information about
the mouse any more and it doesn't even have a brand name on it, just FFC
authorizations.
If any of you archive keepers can find a posting from when I bought this
thing, I would appreciate knowing if I gave a review of it. ;) I think it
would have been around June 1991 or so.
Of course, I suppose I'm the only person in the world to try using an IR
mouse on an 800. Wouldn't it figure? I think this just goes to show. It
doesn't matter how much you know or how long you've been in this business.
If it ain't one thing, it's six others.
Now to put everything back together again.

Jon,
I'm also using a Q800 with many Extensions, including the latest Sound Manger
(v3.0). I also have the Apple Shared Library Manager and a couple other beta
stuff.
Can you be more specific on what kinds of extensions you're running. The kind
of monitor card you have and whether you touch the internal SCSI terminator.
There may be a termination problem. There was a problem with Q800's that did
not ship with the correct termination. If this is the problem I think you can
call Apple or your dealer for more assistance.
Then it may be the memory you purchased. Have you try running without the
additional RAM?
I hope this helps. Good Luck!

Subject: basic question about mac/unix (A)
Peter Sultan, in im 172, writes he had problems transfering files from
a workstation (presumably nonmac) to floppy to his mac. He writes, in
particular:
>I can ftp .hqx files to my workstation, and
>then use mcvert to convert them to MacBinary.
---------
To clarify things a bit, I give two examples.
I've done the following on an ibm workstation connected directly to the
internet for high speed downloads of huge files:
1.
Leave them in hqx format on the workstation, don't use mcvert.
Use AFE to convert to maclike text file and then and only then dehqx it
on your mac.
2.
I've also dealt with macbinary, but never in conjunction with AFE and
have no experience here. For an example of what I have done that might
prove illuminating to your problem, consider what follows.
Sumex codes in hqx. Therefore, you take the default ftp transfer as
ascii. Next on my unix host, I use mcvert. I usually ftp to a directory I
create with no other files in before so that the file I ftp is the only
file there for a mget * to see. That way I can just use mget * and not
spell. OK so I go ../mcvert *.hqx to use an application in my root
directory in this one item directory. Then, out comes a *.bin. Next I set
my kermit to receive macbinary and get *.bin after I instruct the kermit
on the unix also to transfer in binary with command after I type kermit of:
SET FILE TYPE BINARY
when it gets to my mac's drive it usually is a stuffit archive already, no
binhex 5.0 stuff needed.
Remarks:
At first, I can't conceive why you would want the above as you are
limited to baud rates of your modem rather than transfer rates of floppies,
but I had thought the example might somehow clarify things.
Then, I thought better of the usefullness of the example. When, you get
things with the suffix sit or sitd at apple, you have to tell ftp the command
binary and then, if you are stuck on your modem'd mac far away from your
workstation, you might want to avoid mcverting for less complication and
perhaps faster effective information throughput (your modem must compress
text in order to appear to transfer faster, but that work takes time,
maybe, and, when stuff is already compressed, why waste that time?).
So, perhaps example 2 wasn't a useless exercise in understanding.
Hope this helps!

Howdy !
Lately the monitor cord just fell out the back of a Quadra I use. I started

few minutes. I then attached the monitor cord again, and found out that my
startupscreen had lost it color appearance. Bewildered with this new
feature, I opened the file with resedit, but found out that the colors were
still there. I then replaced the startupscreen file with a backup,
restarted et volia the colors reappeared.
Guess what ! I could reproduce it every time ! New color startupscreen,
power on >color<, shutdown, no monitor, power on ,wait, power off, plug in
monitor, power on, colors lost !
Is this a bug, or a gremlin ?

I have used it already for 3 weeks. But heck no, I haven't used it for a

changed my system in anyway. All I did was d/l it and put it in the

There are several things that can cause the demo to expire.
1. Clock set to 1 October 1993 or later.
2. Clock set earlier than the compile date of the demo.
3. The cdev is opened _before_ the computer is restarted.
There could also be a conflict with another extension that we haven't found.
If anyone has this problem and is running some unusual extensions please
let us know.
The other problem could be that the demo you downloaded was not the one
I submitted via "macgifts". Someone may have uploaded a demo that they

Priyajeev Trika asks if there's an extension which allows you to pile up
cuts on the clipboard before pasting the whole lot at once. I don't know if
there's any way of implementing this at the system level, but one of the
things Don Crabb had in mind when he said that there was a whole host of
stuff in Nisus that you couldn't get elsewhere was its ability to append
cuts or copies (using the Shift key). So you can build up a list of items
from earlier in a document and then paste it as a list later.
Alternatively, if you have up to ten frequently pasted items, you can
assign them to up to ten different clipboards and select the cb you want
for any given paste.
I seem to do more writing in FrameMaker than Nisus nowadays; cut/copy
accumulation and multiple clipboards are just two of the many conveniences
I miss.

Well, the subject line just about says it all. My problem with Disk Copy is
that I'm FORCED to copy an image to a floppy disk. I'd like to be able to
copy the image to a folder on my hard disk and then copy it to a floppy at my
convenience. MountImage will do this, but is it a cdev and has to be loaded (
I'm trying to cut down on cdevs/inits which eat up my RAM and have to be
loaded at boot and I can't see loading this every day when I would use it
MAYBE once a month).
Note that DART doesn't even remotely fill any of my needs and has a couple
serious flaws (IMHO): DART forgets which image file was loaded after copying.
This is ESPECIALLY annoying if the copy was NOT successful- not only do you
then have to hunt down a different floppy to try, but you have to reload the
image each time (particularly bad if you want to make multiple copies).
Anyway, any hints would be most welcome...

The final product will be shareware; all contributors will automatically

problems, and solutions if possible. This could include printer ROM problems
and update info, software/PPD conflicts, known causes of Postscript errors
and solutions, and even general tips. Some problems, such as a bug in a
certain application that causes errors, are hard to track and can drive you
nuts. I am trying to create a tool to track these anomolies.
Some specific, known errors are generated between some software and
hardware, such as the interaction of certain versions of Quark with certain
version PDF with with on a specific brand or model printer. I am trying to
save people time hunting down problems by putting these specifications in a
single database. Do you have any info like this you can share? Are there
any sources or utilities you can think of? Any PD definitions of Postscript
errors in general? Any specific hardware problems you can share? I think
this is a valuable rescource, and would love your input.
I am aware of the System of Merritt and the PinPoint Reporter products,
both very good. These software products basically just intercept the code
and explain the errors better that the Mac does. My database is not a
replacement to these, it is an additional tool to offer some extra insight,
and can be used in conjunction. I already have 80 records in the database.
It is coming along very nicely; it is almost ready for release. I would
appreciate any contributions , or comments, that you can make.

Subject: Now Compress (O) (O=Opinion)
One important caveat to leaven all the favorable comment about NowCompress:
If it's your custom to back up a Mac volume to another volume of comparable
size, you may not be able to do it. That's because NowCompress currently
(and transparently) expands all compressed files during the backup.
Let's say, arbitrarily, that you've got 35MB of data on a 40MB hard drive and
that a fair amount of those 35MB are compressed by NowCompress. Let's
further say that you want to back up your 40MB hard drive to a second 40MB
hard drive, perhaps using a common backup utility like DiskFit pro. You
start the backup, and pretty soon you're noticing that the volume of data on
the destination hard drive is growing faster than the amount of data being
backed up. Eventually you probably run out of space on the destination drive
even though its nominal capacity exceeds the volume of backup data.
NowCompress does have a "Keep files compressed when copying to hard disks"
option, but, alas, during backups it doesn't apply. I queried Now Software
via America Online, and here's their reply:
Steve, you're right about NC decompressing the files. Currently, NC will
give any backup app uncompressed data (regardless of the "Keep Compressed"
settings). Lots of pros and cons on this one, but the bottom line is that
we're digging into it. The next update (in beta testing now), will allow
backup apps to ask for compressed data.

Now Techncal Support
I've found that backups do work if you disable the NowCompress extension and
restart your Mac, but that turns out to be something of an inconvenience,
since after you've backed up you have to re-enable the extension and restart
again.
It may therefore be the case -- depending on how/whether you back up -- that
you may want to wait for the update that's now in beta.

You can (if you have the necessary fonts). You are doing something wrong.
Note that DVI files are binary.
Also some communication programs add nuls at the end of a file,
while a DVI file is mean to end in several octal 0337's.
Most DVI readers look at the end of the file to get a list of pages.

You can buy TeXtures. It's very good, as I recall.
(I am presently using OzTeX.)
There are also a number of other versions, MacTeX and CMacTeX,
about which I know nothing.
Incidentally the latest version of OzTeX is shareware --
the previous version is freeware.

The latest shareware version ($25) is 1.6; the latest (and last) freeware
version is 1.42. Check out <midway.uchicago.edu>. I'm not sure of the
directory path, but try [pub/OzTeX/oztex]. I have not upgraded from version
1.42, so I can't tell you first-hand about 1.6; but I hear that it's quite an
improvement over 1.42, and stable.
Hope this helps somewhat. Sorry I can't help with your other three queries.

Subject: Problem with MacX and TCP/IP (Q)
I am working with a Mac IIci connected to an Ethernet with DEC and Sun
workstations. I use MacX (delivered with our DEC Pathworks 1.2 environment) to
login to the workstations. It poses no problem to run DEC Windows sessions
with
MacX connected to a DEC Station or VAX as long as I use DECNet a communication
protocol.
I have also TCP/IP protocoll running on the Mac (Mac TCP delivered also with
the Pathworks environment), but each time I try to change the protocol of a
MacX command from DECNet to TCP/IP, after building up the window to input the
TCP settings (node to connect to, etc) the Mac just produces an error sound
and
the panel returns to the DECNet menu.
I have AdminTCP and MacTCP control panels configured to manual settings and
correctly specified TCP addresses of my Mac and the domain server. The Mac
also
responds to ping commands sent from Unix stations. So apparently MacTCP is
running. What I don't see is any icon of an INIT or system extension at
startup
that reports loading MacTCP whereas DECNet pops up a big Info Panel at
startup.
Please help!

No problem. But you must first de-select the layout which you want to
remove. Then double-click the system file suitcase and drag out the
unwanted layout.

> PB 180c (B+W): 62 minutes
> PB 180c (col): 112 minutes
Boy, those times seem incredibly slow (even for the PB 170). I have a 180c
and have not noticed any problems with speed. I use color full time and have
been pleasantly surprised by the performance (especially after several
reviews knocking the speed relative to the B&W version). Without knowing
exactly how you tested the your machines, I cannot really compare my 180c to
yours, but it took approximately 6 minutes to compress over 7 megs of data
(25-50 files I would guess) using Stuffit Deluxe. You might try running
Speedometer to compare your machine to a stock 180c (archived at sumex-aim).
I ran a set of tests with Speedometer which suggested that the PB 180c and PB
170 should have similar performance overall. The 180c appears pretty slow
with the screen redraws etc compared to just about any other system. I am
assuming that this is a limitation with the LCD technology since I have not
been able to improve the performance by tweaking my system (any suggestions
would be greatly appreciated). Also switching to B&W does not appear to
improve things significantly. It is interesting to note that the performance
of the 180c*s screen does not appear to be significantly better than the 165c
(the speed and quality of the 165c*s passive matrix display has generally
been pounded in reviews). I would suggest making a side by side comparison if
you are thinking of buying either machine (it might save you some money! :-)
).
In summary, I have not found any problems with the performance of my 180c. My
general observations/comparisons to my home system (SE/30 w/ color monitor)
agree with Speedometer benchmarks, namely screen redraws are slower on the
180c and everything else is faster. For me, at least, the 180c is a really
nice system. It fills in nicely for my home system and is a lot easier to lug
around. If you are used to a Quadra or doing screen intensive work, its
performance may be disappointing. My guess is that people looking for pure
speed in a labtop should stick with the monochrome systems or use DOS-based
systems (did I really suggest that? :-) ).
As to possible causes of the slow down that you are seeing, are you using
virtual memory? Last year, I discovered that using virtual memory caused a
substantial hit in graphics/display speed on my SE/30. I turned it off and
added more RAM and am generally pleased with its performance now.
Hope this helps,
Tom

Subject: Sys 6 INIT to create a menu of apps (S)
About a week ago I asked for suggestions for a system 6.0.8
INIT that would create a user-configurable menu that would
list/launch apps. The goal was to make a MacPlus easier to
use for my sister (a first year law student).
I received quite a few suggestions, but they all centered
around two programs:
Apollo. Had the most recommendations. I downloaded a copy
and it worked very well. A neat feature is that you can
put actual documents (vice apps) on the menus. Shareware.
OnCue. Several people suggested this commercial product. I
found someone with a copy and got to play with it a bit.
Also a nice product. I personally preferred Apollo.
I also received several recommendations for things that
produced a menu of only running applications--vice letting
you launch non-running apps. This is due to poor wording in
my original post and I apologize to those people whose time
I inadvertently wasted. I still appreciate your replies.
So what did I do? Well, after showing my sister the
possibilities, she also saw Sys7 running on a MacPlus and
decided she preferred that (despite the slow finder). I
managed to scrounge some old S*L*O*W simms suitable for her
MacPlus. So my sister now has a 4MB Plus running Sys7.0.1
and a fully configurable Apple Menu with aliases to her apps
in it. She's 100% satisfied (at least until she borrows my
IIci the next time she comes over :)

be to familiarize students with the capabilities of WP/DB/SS etc.; there is
really very litle to be gained by spending hours teaching the intricacies

I would suggest getting MacOberon, and teaching them how to build a simple
application. If someone can get their head that computers just do exactly
what you tell them, how annoying that can be, but how potentially powerful,
they'll never be afraid of them again. As far as applications, I don't see
that it matters much which you use as long as you cover basic capabilities.
Claris Works would be better for a short course than trying to go through
all the big ones. If you have a year, you might show it to them after going
through several of the biggies. After all, some Works package will be what
they are likely able to afford at home, or when they go off to college.
